Discover the scary side of Columbus at our
Halloween Party!

...an ancient JackOLantern of Christopher Columbus
When? – October 31 8:00pm til 11pm (the bewitching hourrrr…)
Where? – The Columbus County Arts Council
What? - It’s been ages since we had a grown-up Halloween Party. So Sally Mann and Lisa Richey are joining forces to make one happen. You can expect music, snacks, wine/beer (as long as it lasts), java from Mae Coffee Shop, other spooky soft beverages, play, dancing and PRIZES for the best, most creative and most inappropriate costumes!
PLEASE, SPREAD THE WORD and invite your friends!
Why? – to have FUN and benefit our community. All proceeds from this gig will go to the Greater Whiteville Chamber of Commerce and Discover Columbus First.
Suggested (per person) donations are: $20 (if you’re in costume); $30 (if you don’t feel like dressing up); and $50 (if you want to just stay home and send a donation!).
The fine print (for our accountants) – If you want this to be a business deduction, make your check payable to Greater Whiteville Chamber of Commerce (GWCC). For individual tax deductions, make your check to Whiteville Improvement Association. These individual contributions of more than $10 per person are considered tax deductible, as allowed by law. Yep, receipts are available.

A lot is happening in Columbus County to celebrate our nation’s independence.
Two especially exciting celebrations on two nights are:
FRIDAY NIGHT at South Columbus High School, Tabor City. Entertainment begins at 7pm and fireworks at dark.
SATURDAY NIGHT at Lake Waccamaw ~ just find a place to park as the sun sets and get ready for a show you’re sure to remember.
So you have a weekend FULL of celebration right here at home. Hope to see you THERE!

Even though Labor Day weekend is three months away, it’s not too early to join in the fun of Take the Lake, an exciting outdoor community event.
For years, there’s been a Labor Swim at Lake Waccamaw. Take the Lake adds on to this fun event by also providing an organized way for cyclists, walkers and volunteers to celebrate Lake Waccamaw in a healthy way.
We hope you’ll join in the fun and take our lake … PLEASE!

Tomorrow is the 17th annual National Trails Day.
Thankfully we don’t have to leave Columbus County to explore countless breathtaking trails.
We can follow the Lumber River in Fair Bluff (Thanks to the folks at Whiteville Online for this great image.).
Lake Tabor, in Tabor City, is another fabulous place for trail blazers.
And the rangers at the Lake Waccamaw State Park are going all out for National Trails Day.

Why take a vacation when you can have a staycation?

It’s the same thing every year.
My friends Vince and Cam call and invite me to join them at Wrightsville Beach for their annual Memorial Day festivities - AND I LAUGH.
Why in the world would I want to be on an island (pretty as it is) with what feels like two million other people rather than simply walk to the end of my pier?
Living in Columbus County is a dream come true. Holiday weekends make the dream even more real.
While so many are traveling in search of the perfect long weekend, I plan to have a STAYcation. Tonight, I hope to join the gang at John McNeill’s pier for Friday Fest - the potluck that’s open to all and benefits the Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum and Rube McCray Library. Come one come all.
Tomorrow, I’ll head to the Columbus County Farmer’s Market. By 9am I’ll be at the Whiteville Methodist Church where (hopefully) hundreds will fill packages to Stop Hunger Now. If you’re in the mood, just show up. I’ve participated in another of these events and it was life changing.
If I’m not too worn out by the afternoon, I’ll head over to the Lake Waccamaw State Park to join in their Wildflower Hike. Here’s more info on that.
| Sunday May 24th, 3:00 pm- Join a park ranger for an informative talk and stroll through wildflowers in May. There is also a great opportunity to view various other species including wildlife. Program is open to the public and free of charge. Wear closed shoes, long pants and bring bug spray and bottled water. Meet at the Visitor Center. |
There’s plenty to fill the rest of the weekend too - if you want it full. Or you can do as I plan to - walk to the end of my pier, sip coffee (that I bought from Mae Coffee Shop), remember my dear dad along with all others who serve and have served this country and count my lucky stars.
If you’re lucky enough to be in Columbus County this Memorial Day weekend, you’re lucky enough. That’s what I say.

In addition to the suggestions Justin made in his Monday blog post, there are also lots of ways to celebrate this coming weekend in Columbus County.
If you’re in Whiteville, be sure to stop by Mae Coffee Shop between 6:30 and 8:30 Friday evening to enjoy the fabulous talents of the very popular local band The Waymen. Bring friends!
You can enjoy a free movie & popcorn at the Lake Waccamaw State Park Friday night. On Saturday the rangers are hosting a hike to teach more about “Plants that bite back” Here’s a link with more info. Or you can call the Park office at 646.4748.
There’s always something fun happening at the North Carolina Museum of Forestry, too!
